ALISTAIR MCGOWAN MAKES AN IMPRESSION ON NATIONWIDE CAMPAIGN

As we sit and write this news story, we’ve today had a recorded voicemail from ‘HM Revenue and Customs’ demanding we share financial details or we could be taken to court. Luckily, we quickly realised it was a scam and hung up the phone. Ha!

However, others are not quite so aware. According to research by Nationwide Building Society, 26% of us admit we have been the victim of an impersonation scam at some stage and 38% know someone, beside themselves, who has been a victim.

It’s these findings along with many more, that lead Nationwide to send out a press release sharing alarming statistics to media titles to raise awareness of this increasingly common issue.

While the research findings were more than enough to attract the attention of press, Nationwide saw the opportunity to include the added power of a celebrity spokesperson as a valuable hook. With the story centred around impersonation fraud and the increasing ease for fraudsters to impersonate almost anybody, Nationwide were thrilled when we ‘sauced’ them English comedian and impressionist, Alistair McGowan.

Having built a career around impersonating the rich and famous from actors and politicians, to sportspeople and musicians, Alistair knows all too well how easy it can be to pose as someone else. Available for a series of broadcast interviews which took place virtually, Alistair spoke on behalf of Nationwide where he shared the bank’s research findings, shared tips on how to spot an impersonation scam, while also bringing a touch of comedic flare to keep listeners engaged.
