Forget the summer of 69, it was the summer of 21 that will live long in everyone’s memory. Lockdown restrictions lifted. The Olympics took place in Tokyo. And England united a nation once again as they made it to the final of the Euros. However, while sporting events were opened up to spectators again, the door was also left open for more online fraud cases. This is where the world’s largest building society, Nationwide, launched their campaign to help stop people making mistakes when purchasing tickets online.

With our help at The Celebrity Sauce Co. and using our large network of celebrity relationships we were successful in partnering Nationwide with a football legend to add gravitas to their campaign bid.

We secured Nationwide a partnership with former England striker Teddy Sheringham who, in his 25-year career, became renowned for using his head rather than his feet in the beautiful game. A tactic which paid off as shown by his 288 goals in over 750 appearances.

Teddy, joined by Nationwide’s Director of Digital James Smith, took part in a radio day where the pair addressed Nationwide’s research findings (including that 78% of consumers book their tickets for events online, with 37% waiting in virtual queues to try and secure tickets to events that will sell out quickly). 

Broadcast to numerous national and regional stations, the prolific footballer spoke about the excitement on the run up to the Euros, the sporting events he planned on booking for 2021 and how fans should ensure their online details were up to date to avoid fraud resulting in missing out on the event.

A hugely successful name in sport and with a large fan base, Teddy was the perfect celebrity to add weight to Nationwide’s campaign. His inclusion helped the building society reach a wide audience and spread awareness of online security during what was an exciting summer.
