Reducing digital exclusion with Gail Porter and The Good Things Foundation

At the Celebrity Sauce Co. we love it when we get to work on campaigns that really make a difference. And this was the case for our recent work with The Good Things Foundation, when we sourced them TV presenter and activist Gail Porter for their annual campaign.

‘Get Online Week’ was launched by the foundation who are on a constant mission to fix the nation’s digital divide problem. Now in its 17th year, the initiative is supported by the National Digital Inclusion Network and helps tens of thousands of people get active online in just one week. To help them make this year even more successful as the ones before it, The Good Things Foundation sought our help in finding them a celebrity spokesperson.

Gail Porter is a Scottish television presenter best known for her work on British TV in the 90s. She quickly became a hugely recognisable face in television hosting the likes of Top of the Pops and The Big Breakfast. In 2005 she developed alopecia totalis, bravely opening up about her struggles with the condition and later embracing her shaved head. Since then she has become an ambassador for the Little Princess Trust and an advocate for body confidence.

Never one to shy away from talking about important and often challenging topics, Gail was the perfect person to get behind Get Online Week. During a broadcast day she spoke to numerous media about the initiative and encouraged listeners who may know someone who feels digitally excluded to the free ‘Learn My Way’ course, as well as the community events taking place across the UK.

As part of her role as spokesperson, Gail was responsible for sharing stats around digital exclusion – including that more than three million homes across the UK are still without broadband access and the importance of getting connected. She shared her experience of switching off from technology for a week as part of a challenge and the ways in which she’s personally felt disconnected in her own life. As well as this, she took to her own Instagram to promote Get Online Week and share with her 80.2k followers the importance of staying connected.
