Tom Daley and Gyles Brandreth back a ‘spiffing’ campaign with Tesco Mobile

We got to have some fun with a recent campaign for Tesco Mobile, as we teamed them up with two national treasures – Olympian Tom Daley and broadcaster Gyles Brandreth.

Launched alongside Tesco Mobile’s new ‘essentials’ pay-as-you-go tariff, the campaign centred around celebrating Britain’s favourite forgotten words and encouraging people to bring more personality back into everyday conversations.

According to findings from Tesco, words such as ‘flabbergasted’, ‘chuffed’ and ‘gobsmacked’ topped the list of words the public would most like to see return to regular use.

Tom and Gyles stepped in to bring the findings to life in a series of fun broadcast interviews and social media videos where they discussed the decline of expressive language and the growing dominance of online slang.

Content included a light-hearted campaign video, where Gyles gave old-fashioned alternatives to modern-day slang, replacing ‘slay’ for ‘spiffing’ and ‘spill the tea’ for ‘tittle-tattle’. The result was a highly engaging video that sparked laughter and joy.

Tesco Mobile said the campaign reflected the simplicity behind its new Essentials tariff, because the plan and the language around it seeks to encourage more meaningful communication between loved ones.

The content was well received gaining thousands of likes on social media, started conversations in the comments and with a combined following of 4 million followers brought in great exposure for Tesco and its campaign.
